Planners block six-storey flats development
City planners have rejected outright a scheme to replace a derelict shop with a block of flats housing upwards of 70 people. The proposals would have seen the former Nooze 'n Booze store at 349 Gloucester Road replaced with a three-storey frontage rising to six levels behind.
In a report to Bristol City Council, planners criticised the scale and intensity of the development along with the suitability of the proposed accommodation. They also said the lack of on-site parking would put additional pressure on already crowded nearby streets.
Commenting on the design and impact of the scheme, the report says: "The proposed development, by reason of its excessive height, scale, massing and overall intensity.....would appear overly dominant and out of character with the established form, grain and character of Gloucester Road and the surrounding area."
The site has now been derelict for around 20 years. Wetherspoons were given permission to turn it into a pub but abandoned their plans five years ago.
