Bakery's relief after official hygiene upgrade

Guild of Dough has been given a four-star food hygiene grading – just months after being zero rated by the government’s Food Standards Agency.

The bakery and coffee shop on Ashley Down Road had been ordered to make urgent improvements following a snap inspection which coincided with building works and a boiler breakdown.

Owner Johnny Hull says: “It was not a great day for us but we have got things sorted. Our wholesale customers have been very understanding. But it’s a different matter when the public see you’ve been given a poor rating”.

Guild of Dough opened in 2021 and has since become the go-to place for sourdough and coffee-starved locals who would otherwise have to trek to Gloucester Road.

Guild of Dough's James Bulteel

As general manager James Bulteel says: “Everything was on the Gloucester Road, we were looking around and saw this place and thought – why not?”.

Johnny says: “We started baking in my mum’s kitchen and then moved on to Batches, the community bakery in Bedminster. It was after that we realised that the thing had some momentum”.
